Homemade Apple Cinnamon Rolls

Delicious sweet, homemade cinnamon rolls with a Granny Smith apple and nut filling.
Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm water (about 100 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • ½ warm milk (about 100 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 whole egg
  • 3¾ cups All Purpose flour (I use King Arthur)
Filling
  • 2½ cups finely chopped, peeled, cored Granny Smith or other baking apples
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter (to sauté apples)
  • ½ cup chopped pecans
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (to brush on dough)
Glaze
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, combine yeast and warm water. Set aside for five minutes.
  2. Add in melted butter, milk, sugar, salt, egg and mix well with a wooden spoon.
  3. Add in the flour and mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead for five minutes and place into a greased bowl. Cover with a towel and allow dough to rise for 45 minutes.
  5. While dough is rising, saute diced granny smith apples with 2 tablespoons butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, salt and brown sugar. Cook for 5-7 minutes until apples are softened but not mushy. Drain liquid. Set apples aside to cool.
  6. Turn dough out onto a well floured surface and roll out using a rolling pin into a rectangle shape that is about 15 by 9 inches.
  7. Brush dough with 2 tablespoons melted butter.
  8. Spoon apples evenly over the dough, spreading to the edges. Sprinkle with pecans.
  9. Carefully roll the dough into a spiral.
  10. Use a very sharp knife to cut the cinnamon rolls into 2 inch sections.
  11. Spray a 9x13 dish with cooking spray.
  12. Place cinnamon rolls in baking dish and allow to rise for about 20 minutes.
  13. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  14. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  15. Make glaze by mixing together powdered sugar, vanilla and milk.
  16. Allow cinnamon rolls to cool and drizzle the glaze atop.
